Essential fish habitat suitability (EFHS) models and geographic information system (GIS) were combined to describe nursery habitats for three flatfish species (Solea solea, Pleuronectes platessa, Dicologlossa cuneata) in the Bay of Biscay (Western Europe), using physical parameters known or suspected to influence juvenile flatfish spatial distribution and density (i.e. bathymetry, sediment, estuarine influence and wave exposure). Moran’s eigenvectors maps (MEM) are attractive mathematical objects as they are fairly simple to calculate and can be used in most studies of spatially-explicit data. There is, however, an aspect of MEM analysis that still requires some investigation: the effect of irregular sampling on their modeling performance. This study investigates empirically the behavior of MEMs under different irregularity schemes. It is focusing on simulated scenarios representing sampling designs frequently encountered in ecology. La combinaison de deux approches statistiques, une analyse de partitionnement et la technique de l’arbre de régression mutivariable, a été utilisée afin de développer un modèle d’utilisation d’habitats pour une communauté de poissons d’un lac du Bouclier canadien. Les résultats soulignent l’importance des variables dites associées dans le modèle et l’importance de la taille de l’habitat dans la succession d’autres variables environnementales structurantes et dans la détermination de la composition spécifique de la communauté de poissons du lac à l’étude.

Community structure and temperature dynamics within a mussel assemblage on the Southern East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

The composition, biomass and diversity of the fauna in a Bathymodiolus thermophilus mussel assemblage colonizing diffuse flow areas on the SEPR is described and compared with biological characteristics of other hydrothermal assemblages. The spatio-temporal dynamics of temperatures over fine scales within the mussel habitat are characterized using newly-developed statistical approaches. Temperature data obtained from two adjacent habitats (a cirriped assemblage and a bare substratum) are compared. Cost of Living Dictates what Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises Eat: The Importance of Prey Quality on Predator Foraging Strategies ArchiMer

Understanding the mechanisms that drive prey selection is a major challenge in foraging ecology. Most studies of foraging strategies have focused on behavioural costs, and have generally failed to recognize that differences in the quality of prey may be as important to predators as the costs of acquisition. Here, we tested whether there is a relationship between the quality of diets (kJ.g(-1)) consumed by cetaceans in the North Atlantic and their metabolic costs of living as estimated by indicators of muscle performance (mitochondrial density, n = 60, and lipid content, n = 37). Functional groups are sets of species that play a similar role in a food web. We defined functional groups of fish species based on their morphological characteristics, while using expert knowledge for invertebrates. We measured 9 morphological traits of 72 fish species, and carried out multivariate analyses to assign fish species to functional groups. The analysis identified 9 trait-based fish functional groups to which were added 3 expert-based invertebrate functional groups. Fishing affects fish populations through direct and indirect effects. It can change size structures and/or modify population mean weights. Reference values are thus needed to assess the status of populations in exploited ecosystems. These reference values can either be set by a historical approach, i.e. using information from before the onset of exploitation or overexploitation, or by a simulation approach. Using a model based on life-history parameters, we predicted population mean weights and length structures at equilibrium (in the absence of fishing and for fishing equal to different fishing mortalities) which we compared with contemporary data collected during scientific surveys in the Bay of Biscay.
